Coral bleaching Posted by: GBRclimatechange
Video duration: 158 seconds Coral bleaching occurs when corals get too hot. Bleached corals are essentially sick corals and although they can recover, if temperatures are too warm for too long, the corals will die. Coral bleaching and in some cases death, is an impact of climate change. |

Ocean acidification - Hermie the hermit crab Posted by: GBRclimatechange
Video duration: 97 seconds Ocean acidification is one of the most worrying impacts climate change will have on the Reef. This is a highly complex topic and this animation does not explain the process in detail, rather uses a characters experience of this phenomenon to illicit an emotional understanding that ocean acidification will alter life on coral reefs. |

Climate change impacts on coral reefs (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority) Posted by: GBRclimatechange
Video duration: 82 seconds Climate change is one of the most serious threats to coral reefs worldwide. Mass coral bleaching, which is caused by sustained high water temperatures, has already begun to increase in frequency and severity. Other potential impacts on the Great Barrier Reef are numerous, with many only just coming to light. |

Coral Bleaching (Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority) Posted by: GBRclimatechange
Video duration: 83 seconds Corals live in a partnership with single-celled algae known as zooxanthellae. Coral bleaching occurs when this relationship breaks down under stressful conditions - such as higher-than-normal sea temperatures - and the coral host expels its zooxanthellae. With the algae and the pigments they contain gone, the coral tissue is left transparent, revealing the bright white skeleton beneath. |
